Alan Turing: The Father of Modern Computing

Young Life and Family

Alan Turing was bom in Maida Vale,London. His father was part ofa family of merchants from Scotland. Hismother, Ethel Sara, was the daughter of an engineer.

Education

Turing went to St. Michael's, a school located at 20 Charles Road, St Leonardson-Sea, when he was six years old.

Career

Turing was one of the people who worked on the first computers. He was the first person to think of using a computer to do things that were too hard for a person to do. He created the Turing machine in 1936It was considered a model for modern

computers.

Turing was interested in artificial intelligence. He proposed the Turing test,which would determine when a machine could becalled"intelligent".

During World War II.Turing worked to break German ciphers (secret messages).Using cryptanalysis, a technique that analyzed information to study the secret aspects of systems, he helped to break the codes of the Enigma machine.

From 1945 to 1947,Turing worked on the design of the ACE(Automatic Computing Engine) at the National Physical Laboratory. He presented a paper on 19 February 1946. That paper was"the first detailed design of a stored-program computer"In late 1947, he retumed to Cambridge for a sabbatical year. While he was at Cambridge, the Pilot ACE was built without him. It ran its first program on 10 May 1950.Alan Turing died on June 7, 1954.

En este caso, Alan Turing fue el padre teórico del computador y el precursor de la inteligencia artificial. Su aporte fue muy importante, ya que salvó muchas vidas durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial al haber descifrado los mensajes de las máquinas Enigma que transmitían órdenes codificadas a los submarinos nazis que operaban en el Atlántico. El final de la guerra y el triunfo de los aliados se debió principalmente al trabajo que realizó junto a su equipo humano y técnico.
