Prepositions In - On - At

Esta sección explica cuándo usar cada preposición según el tipo de tiempo o lugar.

Regla general

in se usa para períodos generales: siglos, décadas, años, meses, semanas. También para lugares amplios: país, ciudad, barrio.
on se usa para períodos específicos: días y fines de semana. También para vías: calles y avenidas.
at se usa para horas exactas. También para direcciones y ubicaciones específicas.

Ejemplos de la tabla

We are in 2019. → año (tiempo general).
I live in Concepción. → ciudad (lugar amplio).
On Monday, we have English class. → día (tiempo específico).
My school is on Manuel Montt street. → calle (vía).
Our break is at 11 o'clock. → hora exacta.
I will see you at the shopping mall. → ubicación específica.

Los conectores unen ideas y oraciones. La tabla los agrupa en tres funciones.

¿Por qué es importante usar conectores al escribir en inglés?

Los conectores permiten expresar relaciones entre ideas (causa, contraste, adición) y combinar oraciones. Gracias a ellos el texto deja de ser una lista de oraciones sueltas y se vuelve coherente. Además, ayudan al lector a seguir el hilo del argumento.

¿Qué diferencia hay entre because y due to?

Because introduce una oración completa con sujeto y verbo (because I was tired). Due to se usa antes de un sustantivo o frase nominal (due to the rain). Ambos expresan causa, pero tienen distinta estructura gramatical.
