Consumption of Electricity and Its Effect on the Environment

Our consumption of electricity has a...

major effect on our environment. Most electricity is produced by burning coal a LOT of coal. Buning of coal is highly polluting and releases CO2 into the atmosphere.

Top 6 Facts About Consumption of Electricity

Electricity use is in rapid growth: The world's demand for electdicity will giow by eighty-tive percent between 2010 and 2040this increase is more than today's total use of electricity in the USA, the European Union,China, Russia. Japan, Australia and India.

It does not come from windmills: The

burning of coal is the worid's largest source of electricity, f nothing changes, most of the increased production of electricity will come from burning more coal A LOT more!

Do you put your stereo on standby?: Here is something that might surprise you over the next 10 years, the power used by products in"standby'could be as high as 10 percent of total electricity use Powering these will 1equire 400 medium sized power plants It's a good thing that we have a lot of coal to bun..

Coal plants are ineffective: Only thirty live percent of coal's energy (and some say at the most) is made into electxicity in coai-fired power plants. The rest is lost as heat waste.

Coal burning uses up water, too: A typical coal-fired power plant uses massive amounts of water to create steam in order to move its tubines. Enough water to support a city of approximately 250,000 people

and pollutes the air: Burning coal is a leading cause of smog, acid rain. global warming. and ai toxins.

In pairs, discuss the following questions.

What electronic sources doyou use the most?

b.Do you think you could live without them today? Why? why not?

In pairs, search on the Internet alternative sources of energy that work as electricity sources. For example, the bike washing machine.

In your notebook, write the benefits of these alternative sources.

4Present your work to the class.

Para esto,dé la siguiente instrucción: As a final activity, draw a comparative chart of some type of renewable energy. On one side of the chart place the pros of such energy source and on the other write the cons. Then, with a partner, discuss your charts.

Contexto

Para dar a entender la relevancia de la lectura, explique lo siguiente a los estudiantes: according to the EPA, a 40%of energy consumption in USA comes from electricity. That means that a big part of an individual's footprint comes from electricity use. That's why clean energies have several advantages, such as reducing emission of greenhouse gases and air pollution.

Preguntas de profundización

Si se desea, después de que los estudiantes busquen soluciones alternativas al uso de artefactos electrónicos y sus ventajas, se pueden plantear las siguientes preguntas para fomentar la discusión y pensamiento crítico:

• What are some possible negative aspects of these alternatives?

Can you think of different alternatives to replace these electronic devices?
