Preserving Languages and Cultures

In this project, you will create an anthology of short folktales or legends in English, which will allow you to recognize English words or phrases you use daily in Spanish and the relationship between the English language and the cultures who speak it around the world.

En este proyecto, crearás una antologia de cuentos populares o leyendas cortas en inglés, lo que te permitirá reconocer palabras y frases del inglés que usas cotidianamente en español, asícomo la relación entre el idioma inglés y las culturas que lo hablan alrededor del mundo.

Identification

In the world, there are many languages that allow people to communicate. Some of them incorporate words from other cultures;for example, Spanish words with the prefix al, like alfombra, almohada and alcanfor, come from the Arabic language. In Mexican Spanish,there are also many words that come from Náhuatl, like aguacate,papalote, and tamal, which are still in use in everyday language.

English has also influenced the Spanish of Mexico with words like aparcar, from parking, as well as crush, to refer to an unspoken, often temporary attraction to someone,or random, to talk about something strange, although, originally, it means aleatory. Learning about the origin of words and the infl uence other languages have on your mother tongue allows you to better understand your own language and to deepen your knowledge of the world.
