Mexico-Tenochtitlan was a big city. There was a very large square, twice as large as the square of Salamanca. There were porticoes around the square. There were more than sixty thousand people buying and selling every day. There were markets with all kinds of merchandise: food, jewels of gold and silver, precious stones, bones, shells and feathers. There were apothecaries' shops, barbers' shops and restaurants. There were also many canals, so canoes could pass under the bridges.
